CLOTHING WITH DIGNITY -
GOONJ COMMITS TO CLOTHE 100 VILLAGES
EVERY YEAR ....

The villagers cleaned the village
- as part of their developmental activity, and received clothes as their incentives.

A scene that we hope will not be repeated next year
- children without any clothing
- in the cold winter days.

OUR NEW TARGET....

January 13th 2007, village Gidhdha, about 30 kilometers from Patna. Packed in sweaters and jackets we were there to better UNDERSTAND (!!) the life of Musaharies.

This is what we saw - In the peak of winter days, the children did not have a single piece of cloth covering their bodies - warm clothing was a distant dream.

This is a 35-lakh strong community spread across Bihar, where people are forced to eat rats in dire circumstances of poverty & survival. Clothing is the last priority in their lives.

Parents often make their naked children sleep in a small hole dug in the ground and cover them with grass (pual), to survive the chilly nights.

Women don’t take a bath for many days as they have nothing to change into & often people take loans on heavy interest to buy a single piece of clothing - which lasts them for as long as it does not disintegrate into nothing.

"do not receive clothes as charity -
earn them by doing some work "

Development work - such as
"cleaning of the village"
has already begun

OUR COMMITMENT :

By 1st January 2008, no one across 100 such villages of Bihar will be seen without clothes. Approximately 1,00,000 kgs. of extra material is required by GOONJ.. to take care of this, only along with its present commitment to hundreds of other villages across the country.

THE CHANGING FACE...

GOONJ.. has already sent about 8000 kgs of material to achieve this target in the last few weeks..

The work has begun. Villagers have started cleaning their villages, and in return for this work, they receive new clothes for the entire family.

We achieve multifold results with this process. Much needed work is completed, and the dignity of the villagers remains intact.
